Master Program in Environmental Arts

The Ideal
Master Program in Environmental Arts is an interdisciplinary researching center.
The main concern of the institute is the environment of the human sociality, with the special vision ‘environment as creative cultural production’ in mind.
From the academic viewpoint, ‘environment and art’ research is a pioneer researching field which fits between academic theory and practical social realization. For the academic part, ‘environment and art’ looks into the polemic theories which cover various topics such as aesthetics, philosophy, literature, religion and art history. First the institute tries to bridge the intelligent development, derived from humanistic courses such as aesthetics and philosophy, and the general concern toward environment and culture. Second the institute may systematically extricate resource from those humanistic topics thus setting the theoretical foundation for further criticism and planning on environmental culture.
For the practical part, ‘environment and art’ tries to influence, inform and instruct the theoretical orientation among landscape, architecture, urban design and city planning, thus upgrading the humanistic quality and artistic context of man-made environment, as well as improving the harmonic and balancing development of overall environment. Furthermore, the institute tries to assist our government to erect independent environmental theory and cultural thinking, as well as build meaningful dialogs with Western academies by specific researches and discourses derived form oriental tradition. Finally, ‘environment and art’ anticipates an unique and exquisite cultural style drawn from our substantial environment.


The Orientation
Environment and culture are inseparable in terms of the spatial cultural research. Spatial culture and settlement place of traditional society are abundant cultural and artistic resources. Absorbing experience and expanding knowledge from traditional spatial culture is the unshakable mission for academies. The ultimate goal is to assist contemporaries to confront environmental and cultureal ?crises engendered from urbanized society.
The institute engages in cultural researching methodology, contemporary planning theories, context of spatial culture and traditional settlements. The main concerns are the research of substantial practice and theory renewing among community development, public art, environmental planning and cultural preservation.

The Characteristics
The two-year graduate study is seen as the continuous supplementary program of undergraduate education. Besides obtaining master degree, the students will extend their capacity in professional practicing and appreciating theory, as well as develop an overall understanding in vernacular knowledge, cultural criticism and discursive investigation.
