[1] Frantz Fanon was born in 1925, to a middle-class family in the French colony of Martinique. He left Martinique in 1943, when he volunteered to fight with the Free French in World War II, and he remained in France after the war to study medicine and psychiatry on scholarship in Lyon. Here he began writing political essays and plays, and he married a Frenchwoman, Jose Duble. Before he left France, Fanon had already published his first analysis of the effects of racism and colonization, Black Skin, White Masks (BSWM), originally titled "An Essay for the Disalienation of Blacks," in part based on his lectures and experiences in Lyon.

[2] ARMET FRANCIS is one of Britain's leading black photographers. Born in Jamaica in 1945 he arrived in London in 1955. On leaving school he did various jobs before deciding on photography as a career. He trained in his chosen field by working for five different London photographers to get a broad knowledge of his subject. He went on to work on a freelance basis in the fields of advertising, fashion and documentary photography. In 1969 he went back to the place of his birth: "to get his grounding." In 1976 he went back to Africa: "a manifestation of freeing the self." Armet Francis is dedicated to photographing black people in the African diaspora to show us their daily lives. This body of work culminated in an exhibition at the Photographers Gallery in 1984 and the publication, the following year, of his book, The Black Triangle: The People of the African Diaspora.
